What are the workouts like?
Our workouts last approximately 45 minutes. The fastest swimmers normally cover 1.25 miles in 35 to 40 minutes. Slower swimmers may take 45 to 50 minutes to cover the same distance. Other people may choose an alternate route to decrease the distance covered.
Wetsuit or no wetsuit?
This is your personal preference. Most of the swimmers in our group wear wetsuits but many do not. If this is your first time in “cold” water, we recommend wearing a wetsuit. They can be rented cheaply. If you decide to go “skin” we recommend limiting your time in the water until you can properly gauge what your body can handle.
Is there dangerous wildlife?
There are several species of sharks that live in San Francisco Bay. Most of them are small and we are not on their menu. Great White sightings in San Francisco Bay are extremely rare and there are no records of anyone ever being bitten by one in the bay. You will see sea lions and harbor seals swimming near you. They seem to be curious but tend to keep their distance.
Does the weather affect the swims?
Our Sunday and Thursday swim courses can be easily adjusted to account for windy conditions. We swim in the rain. If there is lightning, we clear the water.
What should I bring to a Sunday Swim?
Bring your wetsuit and or swim suit, goggles, towel and dry clothing to wear after your swim. Neoprene caps are recommended but optional. A small recovery snack and/or a warm drink after your swim will feel like a welcome reward.
What Facilities are there?
At Aquatic Park, there are restrooms nearby but there is nowhere that is suitable for private changing into/out of clothes. You may want to arrive with your bathing suit under your clothing. At Crissy Field, there are changing rooms for privacy and outdoor showers to rinse after your swim.
Do you offer private lessons, training or swims?
Yes, yes and yes. Contact us about designing something to meet your needs.
