This swim, sandwiched between Alcatraz and Angel Islands, is a thrilling and iconic challenge set against the stunning backdrop of San Francisco Bay. This approximately 2-mile stretch of water offers a unique perspective of two historic islands: the infamous Alcatraz Island, once a legendary federal prison, and Angel Island, known for its natural beauty, hiking trails and its own history as an immigration station.

Swimmers will navigate the chilly waters, typically ranging from 55 – 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which adds an extra layer of excitement. The currents can be strong, meaning it’s essential for participants to be prepared and ready to tackle the ever-changing San Francisco Bay waters.

The swim begins near Alcatraz Island, where participants can appreciate the stark cliffs and remnants of the old prison. As you swim your way across the bay, the views shift to the serene landscapes of Angel Island, landing on a small, serene beach. Swimmers can also take in the panoramic views of the Golden Gate bridge, San Francisco skyline, and in the distance, Treasure Island and the Bay Bridge.

Whether you’re a seasoned open water swimmer or a first-time adventurer, this swim is not just a test of endurance but it’s an unforgettable experience that combines natural beauty, challenging currents, and a deep sense of history.  It’s a must-do for any open-water swimming enthusiast.
